If we build our strength in Arizona, if we organize effectively, if we pick the right fights and resource them adequately - we vastly increase our odds of being able to codify Roe and pass democracy reform in about 20 months. Simple as that. Indivisibles,
I’ve got some very cool news to share. You may have heard me tell Rachel Maddow what Indivisible’s north star is for the next two years: We want to rebuild the Democratic trifecta so that we can reform the filibuster, codify Roe, and pass Democracy reform. That’s where we’re headed. And today I can reveal a linchpin in that strategy: quadrupling down on Arizona.
The math is simple and compelling. Why Arizona? Because the path to expanding our Senate margins, retaking the House, and holding the presidency runs through this state. Arizona can deliver us 11 electoral college votes, one new Democratic senator, and two new Democratic House members. That gets us almost the entire way to a new Democratic trifecta. Let’s review what an opportunity this is:
- Replace Sinema with a real Democrat. Sinema betrayed us, but replacing her isn’t about vengeance -- it’s about getting the votes we need to codify Roe and pass democracy reform. In 2022, we came 2 votes away from axing the filibuster to pass democracy reform and codify Roe early last year. Sinema and Manchin voted against us. Then, in November, we picked up 1 new pro-filibuster reformer in the Senate with John Fetterman. That puts us 1 vote away from having the votes we need. If we replace Sinema with a real Democrat, that’s the ballgame -- regardless of whether or not Manchin wins or supports us. Manchin could lose or vote against us and it wouldn’t matter. I’ll say again: We don’t need Manchin in order to codify Roe -- we just need to replace Sinema.
- Retake the House. There are currently two Arizona Republicans representing districts that Joe Biden won in 2020. They are voting with Marjorie Taylor Green 95% of the time. They are political extremists representing swing districts. And we are going to defeat them. If we take these two seats, we are only three seats away from retaking the majority. Through our Unrepresentative 18 campaign, we are already focusing on picking up the remaining seats we need. These two Arizona seats bring the House home.
- Hold the presidency. I challenge you to draw up an electoral college map that delivers the presidency to Trump or DeSantis or some other Republican wackadoodle but delivers Arizona’s 11 electoral votes to Joe Biden. It is an extremely narrow path. Arizona was one of the top four most closely decided states in 2020. If we were to hold Arizona but lose the other three -- Nevada, Wisconsin, and Georgia -- the Republicans would still lose the presidency. If we hold Arizona down, we eliminate all but the most unlikely outcomes for the 2024 presidency.
I know national politics is complicated. I know there are a lot of uncertainties. But this is simple. If we build our strength in Arizona, if we organize effectively, if we pick the right fights and resource them adequately -- we vastly increase our odds of being able to codify Roe and pass democracy reform in about 20 months. Simple as that.
Simple -- but not cheap. Which is why, after I’m done explaining exactly what we plan to do, I’m going to ask you to chip in to help us do it. And if you’re already convinced, great! Here’s the link where you help fund this work right now.
What Indivisible national is going to do
Running a single-state campaign is nothing new for us. Earlier this year, we went all-in on the Wisconsin Supreme Court race. We endorsed in the primary, we worked with Indivisibles in Wisconsin and across the country to contact hundreds of thousands of voters, and held a statewide town hall with Mandela Barnes and Judge Janet, AND WE WON. We wiped the floor with the MAGA opponent, we flipped control of the state supreme court, and as a result the most gerrymandered state in the country has the chance to breathe in democracy for the first time in many, many years.
We can accomplish the same thing but on a national scale by quadrupling down in Arizona. I keep using that word “quadrupling” -- what does it mean? Here are the three things I want to accomplish:
- Make Sinema’s political life hell this year. Sinema is a preening political opportunist who sells her constituents out on a weekly basis. She thinks she can win reelection as an “independent” with a campaign that buys a new image for herself paid for by Wall Street bros and Pharma execs. We will make her the most unpopular politician in the country with a cool trick we innovated: telling the truth. Every Arizonan needs to know just how craven and corrupt Sinema is -- and we’ll work with our Indivisible groups to make sure they do.
- Make the vulnerable House Republicans famous. The two Arizona Republicans representing Biden-won districts vote with Marjorie Taylor Greene 95% of the time, but they’re hiding from public attention. They don’t want to alienate their MAGA base so they vote along with their party on everything, but they don’t want their constituents to know how extreme their votes are - so they hide from public view. Here at Indivisible, we’ve found that sunlight is the best disinfectant. Our goal is simple: make these members locally famous for their extremism.
- Supercharge our locals. There are about three dozen Indivisible groups spread across the entire state of Arizona. I want these groups building power, developing leadership teams, and running fantastic, locally rooted campaigns that take on MAGA and build our pro-democracy coalition in the state.
Grassroots run, grassroots funded
Sinema isn’t raising money from the grassroots -- that’s not her style. In the entire first quarter of this year, she raised only about $5,000 from small donations. Her funding and the funding for her MAGA allies in the House comes from big money donors -- lobbyists, Wall Street financiers, and Big Pharma execs.
In contrast, Indivisible’s largest source of funding is you. Really -- grassroots donations allow us to do this work. If we raise more money for our Arizona work we will do more to mess with Sinema’s plans in Arizona. If we don’t, we’ll have to reduce the scale of work in the state. Every single dollar we raise from this email and any other communication you get from us on this will go directly to those three goals I listed above -- making Sinema’s life political life hell, making those vulnerable House Republicans famous, and supercharging our local Indivisible groups in Arizona.
If you’re able to, I hope you’ll consider helping us fully fund this work. I know we can win this. Our opponents are craven and weak. Our positions are popular. And we have more people on our side -- we just have to organize them. So that’s what we’re going to do -- with your help.
