Climate justice is health justice. As our health care workers dedicate themselves day-in and day-out to make their patients well, the health care system unfortunately is polluting our planet and making people sicker.

This legislation would take on the dual public health and climate crises through historic investments in health care systems around the country to make sure people can get care before, during, and after climate disasters. It would protect the health and well-being of our workers, our communities, and our planet.

We’re far past the time for small steps and half measures. We’re living in a climate emergency — the most recent UN climate report makes it clear that we have to take big, bold action on climate change right now to ensure a livable future and prevent unthinkable devastation.

That’s why the Green New Deal for Health takes nothing for granted when it comes to tackling the climate crisis and the health care challenges it brings. The bill would invest billions of dollars in community health centers, good-paying health care jobs with a right to organize, mental health services, heat resilience, infrastructure that will withstand extreme weather disasters, climate and health education, and more.

It would also revive a New-Deal-era program to modernize, weatherize, and reduce the environmental footprint of health facilities to protect public health and keep care systems working for those who need them.

This bill boldly reimagines our health care system, bringing together the principles of the Green New Deal — good-paying jobs, justice for all, and a livable environment — to create a health care system that people deserve.

Last year, we proved that we can pass historic climate legislation if we organize and fight for it. Now we have a chance to secure this crucial new piece of the Green New Deal.
