As the only meteorologist in Congress, my ears perk up when I hear colleagues talk about extreme weather or how to handle climate change. I also feel a responsibility to call out climate misinformation when I see it.

A few days ago, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (I know…🙄) tweeted out a ton of nonsense and outright lies about climate change. Here’s one claim she made:

MTG: There is no amount of... carbon reduction that will stop or tame weather events or climate change."

I’ll admit, it can get a little exhausting rehashing science that’s been settled for decades, but here we are. In case it isn’t clear: emissions from greenhouse gases DO warm the planet, which causes climate change. The sooner we can stop emitting so much, the better off we’ll be in avoiding its worst impacts.

Look, it’s easy to call out nonsense from extremists like Greene. What’s not easy is getting to the core of this issue: Democrats are facing a communication crisis on climate change.

We often frame the climate change debate around things like the dwindling polar bear population or dire warnings of a global catastrophe in “20 or 30 years.” While both are very real outcomes, the climate crisis is impacting our day-to-day lives right now.

Notice extreme weather events becoming much more severe in recent years? For local farmers, even tiny temperature swings can have a devastating impact on crop yields. If you're in a town near the river like Moline, IL, serious heat could mean serious flooding and damage to local businesses.

In Congress, it's my goal to frame climate change through the lens of how it impacts our daily lives. The ‘here and now’ can't be denied, and we need to paint that picture if we’re going to undercut climate deniers like Greene.
