John,
Yesterday, we expected a decision from the conservative-dominated Supreme Court about the fate of Mifepristone, an abortion pill that is used in more than half of U.S. abortions that was first approved by the FDA over twenty years ago. However, they pushed back their decision and have allowed the drug to remain available until Friday.
This abortion pill is safe, and removing it from the market would drastically limit families' ability to make their own reproductive healthcare decisions. Right now, this medication is still available, but if the Supreme Court agrees with lower courts, mifepristone will remain available but with certain conditions. For example, it will no longer be available by mail.
This would also set a dangerous precedent for the court to override the FDA’s approval. Typically, courts look to the FDA when it comes to scientific or medical considerations, and legal experts fear this ruling could open the door for challenges of other approved medicines in the U.S.
I am proud to stand with the vast majority of Americans – yes, even a majority of Republicans – who agree that decisions about reproductive healthcare should be made by families, not the courts and not the government.
Help me keep up the fight for reproductive rights by chipping in whatever you can to my re-election campaign. Our race will be one of the top in the country in 2024, and we can’t afford to lose our voice in Washington!
