Firstly, I have some really good news to share. Schipol airport in Amsterdam has just announced that it intends to ban private jets. [1]

This is a massive victory for the environment and also common sense. Schipol is Europe’s third largest airport, so this is significant and hopefully is the start of a positive trend.

This is important because private jets are the worst! A private jet flight causes about 10 times more CO2 emissions per person than a regular flight and 50 times more than the average train ride. [2]

I’m embarrassed to share that nobody loves private jets more than the UK. Last year a staggering 90,256 private flights took off from UK airports. [3]

If Schiphol airport can ban private jets from its runways, then why can’t we in the UK? Can you ask Rishi Sunak to follow the Dutch example and ban private jets?

You might want to sit down when reading this next fact. The most pointless private jet journey of all last year, was less than five miles. It was between Farnborough and Blackbushe in Hampshire. [4]

The ultra-rich are trashing our planet pointlessly. Many of these journeys can be covered almost as quickly by train, and some of them by bicycle.

Millions of people around the world are facing climate chaos, losing livelihoods or worse, while a tiny minority are burning jet fuel like there’s no tomorrow.

If the government is serious about net zero and a fair transition to low-carbon transport then private jets should be first on the chopping block.

Over 75,000 people have signed the petition calling on the UK to ban private jets. I’m hoping that you can add your name to this petition to make our collective voice louder and more powerful.

If enough of us kick up a fuss about this, we can prove to the government that banning private jets would be an extremely popular thing to do.
