Just 6 states. That’s right, just SIX!
That’s the tiny number that stands between you and me, and the number of states needed to ratify the calling of a disastrous Article V Constitutional Convention. An event unprecedented in U.S. history that could mean major constitutional chaos.
We have no choice but to immediately step up our grassroots response to defeat this effort. That’s why I’m rushing this alert to you and every member of Common Cause.
Many constitutional experts believe this is the least known but greatest present threat to our democracy – and it’s happening right now, behind closed doors and out of the public eye.
Wealthy special interest groups like the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) are spending big money to lobby state lawmakers, demanding they vote to ratify the convening of an Article V convention to radically reshape our U.S. Constitution.
If allowed to succeed, unelected, unaccountable delegates will be granted the power to write their far right-wing agenda into our Constitution.
Those who want to move an Article V convention talk about shredding First Amendment protections. Gutting environmental regulations. Rolling back civil rights advances. And enshrining far-right wing economics as permanent fiscal policy through a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution.
MOST FRIGHTENING OF ALL... if just 6 more states sign on, the Koch network, the Mercers, corporate funders, and their extremist allies will reach the two-thirds supermajority required to convene the convention they need to tear apart our U.S. Constitution.
So far, we’ve been able to stop them in a number of key states. BUT...we’ve already seen over 100 new bills for Article V introduced in 2023 alone. We must urgently redouble our efforts if we’re going to stand a chance against this renewed pressure to pass Article V.

Common Cause activists have already stopped Montana’s call for a convention this year by just one vote. And before that, we’ve successfully rolled back calls for an Article V convention in Colorado, Delaware, New Mexico, Maryland, and Nevada.
