Senate Republicans may have decided to bring their sham impeachment “trial” of Donald Trump to an end this week. But the disgrace that they have brought on themselves through their shameless cover-up needs to stick with them forever.

New evidence is emerging daily showing the massive corruption and self-dealing at the core of Trump’s administration. Despite that, Republicans are likely to orchestrate a vote to acquit Trump and cover up his crimes as soon as Wednesday — all without hearing from a single witness for the first time in an impeachment trial in American history.

If there was any doubt about whether we needed to do more than just defeat Trump this year, this should put an end to it.

Let me be clear: We absolutely need to end Trump’s corrupt occupation of the White House this November. But we also need to sweep out the entire Republican Party apparatus that is enabling that corruption — in the Senate, the House, and statehouses. And we need to do it with candidates who will fight for justice, stand with working people, and inspire the kind of grassroots, people-powered movement that we need if we are going to defeat the entrenched establishment forces arrayed against us.

The Working Families Party is going all out to defeat Trump and his enablers in every corner of the country and replace them with hundreds of progressives who we can count on to fight for working people in 2020. We’ve all seen enough of Trump by now to know how he is likely to react to his sham “acquittal.”

He’s going to try and double down — to find new ways to abuse the power of his office for personal profit, to inflict more cruelty on working families, to heighten his xenophobic and white supremacist policies and rhetoric, to do everything he possibly can to try and hold on to power in November whether legal or not.

Building a grassroots movement of working people across our differences with the resilience we need to take on this challenge, sweep Trump and his enablers out of power, and realize our vision of a country for the many — that’s our mission.

As I write this, WFP organizers nationwide are on the ground working to elect hundreds of progressive candidates for office, some in primary elections that start in just a few days. These are candidates who will fight for policies like a Green New Deal and Medicare for All and to end mass incarceration, candidates who aren’t beholden to the billionaire class or the Democratic Party establishment and won’t be afraid to fight for big structural change, candidates who absolutely rely on grassroots supporters like you in order to win.

If we come together, I know we can make 2020 the year that we change this country forever — and make sure all the Republicans who are covering up for Trump right now won’t forget it anytime soon.
