John,
After making his case to an audience of Wall Street CEOs earlier this week, Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy finally unveiled his plan to avoid a catastrophic default. And he plans to hold a vote next week!
We’re rallying our national allies to send messages to members of Congress before the vote is held. We need to stop this disastrous plan and demand Speaker McCarthy and his caucus stop holding the debt ceiling hostage in exchange for massive cuts to critical programs for working families, the aging, people with disabilities, and vulnerable communities.
Rush a contribution right now to fight back against Kevin McCarthy’s hostage-taking and to defeat his plan that’s a bad deal for millions of people and a good deal for millionaires, billionaires, and billion-dollar corporations.
The biggest cuts proposed in McCarthy’s plan represent a return to fiscal year 2022 levels and shrinking spending every year for the next decade. They don’t give details on how the money would be divvied up, but if they exempt the Pentagon, it would be at least a 22% across-the-board cut for virtually everything else. According to House Appropriations ranking member Rep. Rosa DeLauro, proposed right-wing budget cuts would having a chilling effect on programs relied upon by millions of people:
-
Head Start funding reductions would eliminate 200,000 slots for children in families with low incomes.
-
101,000 child care slots would be eliminated.
-
More than 1 million older adults would lose meals -- in many cases their only meal of the day.
-
640,000 families would lose their housing vouchers out of the 2.3 million households now using vouchers; other cuts in affordable housing programs would affect hundreds of thousands of additional households.
-
Anything over a 6% cut in the current budget would be “catastrophic” for the Social Security Administration. For every $100 million cut, 1,000 people would have to be laid off -- the equivalent of closing 40 field offices, at a time when people with disabilities are already forced to wait many months for their applications to be processed.
-
The funding reduction for K-12 education in low-income communities would equal the loss of 60,000 teachers.
And, while McCarthy and his caucus are demanding cuts to everything from Social Security staff to Medicaid to SNAP food benefits, he’s also calling for taking back IRS funding -- funding signed last year by President Biden, which cracks down on wealthy and corporate tax cheats and allows the IRS to better serve everyday taxpayers.
We’re rallying our allies right now to oppose McCarthy’s hostage-taking and his very bad deal for ordinary people. Rush a contribution today to fight back and win!
