Trudeau tells Canadians:
Get money back from
the carbon price

As we continue to push for a carbon fee and dividend here in the United States, carbon pricing is thriving in other parts of the world. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently took to social media to inform residents in four provinces that they had received money back from the federal carbon price.

Here's what Trudeau had to say:

"If you live in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, or Alberta, you probably noticed a deposit in your bank account today. It's called the Climate Action Incentive. It's how we make sure that we put money in your pockets while we put a price on pollution. It actually puts more money back in the pockets of millions of Canadians, and it's a small part of our big plan to fight climate change, keep our air clean, make life more affordable, and grow the economy for everyone."

The average Canadian is coming out ahead under Canada’s fee and dividend policy. A report shows that the carbon price applied in 2021 was $555, but the average rebate was $804. The current carbon fee in Canada is $65 per ton and will increase $15 each year until it reaches $170 in 2030.

• Hawaii House passes resolution: Thanks to the work of CCLers in Hawaii, the state’s House of Representatives recently passed a resolution in support of a nationwide carbon fee and dividend. Three Hawaii group leaders shared more about their efforts in this Civil Beat op-ed.

• Climate collab in a conservative state: Montana CCLer Alex Amonette was featured on the latest episode of the EcoRight Speaks podcast alongside allies from RepublicEn and the American Conservation Coalition. The group shares about their collaboration to publish climate-focused media like this in newspapers across Montana.

• ICYMI: NBC covered CCL event: In case you missed it, an NBC climate reporter wrote a great story about CCL’s conservative conference, featuring quotes from several CCL volunteers in attendance.

Take action this week

If you have a little time: Post on social media for Earth Day. This Saturday is Earth Day, when lots of folks will be thinking more about climate and the environment. Share one of these CCL social media posts between now and Saturday to ride the wave of Earth Day attention! You could also check out any Earth Day activities going on with your local chapter and post about those on your favorite social platform.

If you have more time: Submit Earth Day letters and op-eds. Newspapers are usually eager to accept climate or environmental content ahead of Earth Day. Use our LTE Topics guidance or op-ed templates to submit an Earth Day letter to the editor or an opinion piece before Saturday.

Featured chapter: CCL William & Mary

College students have plenty on their plates already — but some of them are also taking on the task of pushing a carbon fee and dividend in Congress! The CCL chapter at the College of William & Mary has kicked off a simple, powerful sign campaign conceptualized by chapter member Emily O’Keefe. Students hold up signs that identify carbon fee and dividend as an effective climate policy and include a link for people to write to their representatives. Folks at William & Mary and beyond are getting creative about where they put their signs — on laptops, in dorm windows, or simply propped up in public — and then sharing their shots on Instagram.

Their efforts were recently profiled in The Flat Hat, the school’s newspaper. “I believe as young people we have a lot of power, because adults in office are much more likely to listen to us,” says Corina Chang, who co-leads the chapter with Philip Ignatoff.

“The idea is really taking off,” says Steffanie Munguia, CCL’s Student Engagement Manager. “It will be a focus for our higher ed chapters during Earth Month.” Great work, CCL William & Mary!
