Cook County Commissioner Scott Britton has a simple acronym to describe the flag that currently flies from county buildings.

“It’s an S.O.B.,” Britton said.

That’s “seal on a bedsheet,” for the uninitiated.

“It’s just not a very good concept,” Britton said.

But it’s an apt description for the rather unimaginative current County Jack: the county seal in a field of white with the words “Cook” and “County” above and below.

“There are a lot of flags like that, and nobody really cares about it, because there’s no significance to people, whereas with Chicago —with the four stars for four important historical moments, one blue line that’s for the lake and the other for the river ... that has significance to people,” Britton said.

“When I became president of the [Cook County] board … we inherited this old building, and I had the opportunity as the president of the board to make sure this building got preserved,” Preckwinkle said… She credited Landmarks Illinois for keeping the drumbeat alive for nearly 20 years as well as the development team for bringing the vision to life… Asked about the importance of preserving the hospital, Preckwinkle echoed McDonald, stating the historical fabric of the building as being Chicago’s Ellis Island. “If you think of iconic structures in New York it's the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, in Cook County, I would argue it’s this building,” Preckwinkle said.

“The Cook County Surviving Spouse Tax Abatement gives families of fallen police, military and rescue workers the chance to cut as much as 30% off their taxes. The new ordinance only applies to spouses of people who have died on duty since 2012. The Cook County Board passed the ordinance last September.
