John,
This Tuesday is the State of the Union (SOTU) address. During normal times, I would consider it my duty to attend and hear the President’s agenda for the upcoming year. Unfortunately, these are not normal times.
President Trump has defied Congressional subpoenas, ignored requests for documents, and instructed his aides and employees to do the same. He has done everything in his power to thwart House investigations of him and, in doing so, destroy the separation of powers that protect democracy in our nation. Sadly, Republicans in the Senate have no interest in defending the separation of powers and it looks increasingly likely they will let Donald Trump off the hook in a sham trial.
Because of that, John, I am seriously considering not attending the President’s SOTU address this week. But I want to hear from you.
What do you think? Do you believe I should attend the President’s State of the Union address on Tuesday?
Before making major decisions like this, John, it is extremely important for me to hear from you and what you’re thinking. As a senior member of the Judiciary Committee that drafted articles of impeachment against Donald Trump, my absence would definitely be noticed. Before making my final decision on this somber matter, I want to hear your thoughts. Will you fill out this quick survey and tell me whether you think I should attend the SOTU?
In solidarity,
Hank
