Here’s what my Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) would mean in practice:
It gives the U.S. President the legal authority to act with the force of the military against deadly drug cartels in Mexico.
This does not mean invading or going to war with Mexico, as critics will lead you to believe. It can take many forms, including non-kinetic action like intelligence collection and sharing. An AUMF is also the minimum authority needed to operate with the Mexican military (as we’ve done with other allies battling internal insurgencies).
We’re focused squarely on one mission: taking down the cartels that are killing Americans. And working with Mexico would be a key part of that.
The Trump Administration had the strongest border security policies we’ve ever seen – and they worked. President Trump understands the dire threat from the Mexican drug cartels that have operational control of our southern border. My authorization for use of military force against the cartels is the most effective way to deal with that threat, which is why President Trump supports it.
We need you in this fight.
