"...indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
That, of course, is how the Pledge of Allegiance ends. Our country has strayed so very far from this ideal. The U.S. incarcerates more of its population than any country in the world. And billionaires and big business interests have placed vast sums of money on the scales of justice to bend the courts to the will of the wealthy and well connected.
All the more reason to circle February 18 on your calendar. There's a primary election for Wisconsin Supreme Court that day along with many important local elections in communities across the state. A field of three candidates for the state's highest court will be narrowed to two for the general election held on April 7, which is also Wisconsin's presidential primary.
Daniel Kelly currently holds the seat, but not because he was chosen by the voters. He was appointed to the state Supreme Court by former Governor Scott Walker in 2016 to replace retiring Justice David Prosser. As an attorney Kelly defended some of Walker's most controversial actions in court, and also represented Republican lawmakers in a 2012 lawsuit challenging their 2011 redistricting maps.
Challenging Kelly are Marquette University law professor Ed Fallone and Dane County circuit court judge Jill Karofsky.
Do your homework. Decide who is best aligned with your values. And don't let February 18 come and go without voting. Liberty and justice for all are at stake.
