On Wednesday, April 19, 2023, just one day after he was hosted in Washington DC by the Heritage Foundation, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is scheduled to make his first appearance in South Carolina, but his entrance into the key-early primary start is already off to a rocky start.
DeSantis will be speaking at Spartanburg at First Baptist North Spartanburg on Asheville Highway at an event scheduled to begin at 7 p.m, but doors open at 5:30 p.m.
DeSantis was invited to speak in South Carolina by State Senator Josh Kimbrell.
Joshua Kimbrell is currently a South Carolina State Senator, representing District 11. He was elected in November 2020.
Before his election to the State Senate, Kimbrell ran in the congressional primary in 2018 to fill Trey Gowdy’s seat (SC-4). However, he lost the primary and came in fourth place, despite being endorsed by Club for Growth.
Kimbrell recently told the Associated Press that he would be hosting DeSantis to give him exposure to the Upstate of South Carolina, which is heavily Republican, and that he’s been in touch with the Governor for months making plans to bring him to South Carolina amid DeSantis’s shadow Presidential Campaign.
“I’ve told everybody associated with his team, you’ve got to get here early and often,’” said Kimbrell, who said he has already joined efforts with a political action committee urging DeSantis to get into the race. “I’ve tried to make it clear to them that, if you want to win, you’ve got to get here early.”
South Carolina is a key-early primary state that Republican candidates who wish to secure the GOP Presidential nomination need to win.
I have confirmed that Sen. Josh Kimbrell was arrested on October 14, 2014 and charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor under the age of eleven. He was accused of fondling and committing other sexual acts against his three-year-old son, and was held behind bars without bond. Supporters of Kimbrell came to his defense, and he blamed the charges on his ex-wife, Kacy Kimbrell.
The charges were eventually dropped by the Thirteenth Circuit Solicitor, Walt Wilkins, in February 2015, four months after Kimbrell’s initial arrest. Wilkins stated, "Upon receiving this case from the Greenville Police Department and completing an investigation spanning almost four months, my office has determined that there is insufficient evidence to prove the elements of this crime beyond a reasonable doubt."
However, the Greenville Police argued otherwise, and released a statement supporting their decision to arrest Josh Kimbrell, and the charges filed against him. Greenville Police, which made the initial arrest, also put out a statement and stood by their decision to arrest Kimbrell. "We understand that the solicitor's office has declined to prosecute the case against Josh Kimbrell. However we stand by the fact that probable cause was established to obtain the warrant for Kimbrell's arrest."

Kimbrell eventually wrote a book about his experience entitled, Fatherhood on Trial: The Fight to Be a Father in the Age of Divorce.
It is also worth noting that DeSantis’s scheduled event in South Carolina with Kimbrell comes one day after the Daily Mail [ [link removed] ]confirmed [ [link removed] ]my reporting from December 2022 about how DeSantis’s admitted best friend, and one of his donors named Kent Stermon was under investigation for sex with a minor at the time he committed suicide.
In 2014 Nikki Haley, the former Governor of South Carolina who has also jumped into the 2024 Presidential Primary, named Kimbrell to her “Faith and Family Coalition”. However, the day that news of his arrest broke, she removed his name from her campaign website.
South Carolina's Republican Presidential Primary will take place on Feb. 24, 2024. It is the first in the South, and third in the nation.
DeSantis will have a difficult path ahead securing support in South Carolina after his associations with an alleged child diddler have been brought to light his first day on the campaign trail.
