Over the past few weeks, Tennessee has made it crystal clear that democracy is not a priority for its legislators.

We saw the Republican State Senate Supermajority choose their self-interests over the lives of children when they expelled two Black lawmakers for expressing their rightful freedom to protest against gun violence.

But that’s not all that has been happening in Tennessee. Tennessee Republicans have been systematically working for years to disenfranchise the Democratic minority across the state through heavy partisan gerrymandering.

The vulnerability of Tennessee’s democracy goes far beyond the expulsion of Justin Jones and Justin Pearson. And we will continue to see its democracy at risk if we don’t act.

So the fight to restore democracy, fairness, and equality is on and one of the best ways to help is to support the Tennessee Democrats, who are working hard in that fight.

It’s time to sound the alarm. Democracy is under attack in Tennessee and there is no doubt that other red states will use these same tactics as a blueprint around the country to continue to support their self-interests — whether that be pleasing the gun lobby or limiting reproductive rights.

As long as these Republicans have the majority, they will continue to gerrymander the maps to disenfranchise marginalized voters.

They will continue to limit freedom of assembly to silence the voice of the opposition.

And they will continue to try to dismantle our democracy.

So while the news cycle may have moved past the events occurring in Tennessee, we cannot.
