Team, if you’re receiving this email, then you probably already know that our nation’s opioid epidemic is deeply personal to my family. When I was 6 years old, my mom injured her back and was prescribed a dangerous amount of opioids — ultimately leading to a decades-long battle with addiction. For 10 years, I brought my experience fighting to save my mom’s life in a broken behavioral health system to the Colorado State Legislature — working with Democrats and Republicans to ensure others who are struggling with a substance use disorder or a mental health issue have access to the treatment they need in Colorado. Now that I’m serving in Congress, I’m taking this fight to the national level — because every day across this country, people are losing their lives to the scourge of opioid addiction. And fentanyl has made this crisis so much deadlier. Fentanyl has taken over drug supply chains globally and was responsible for more than 85% of all opioid overdose deaths in the U.S. in 2021. That’s why I just introduced the Stop the Import of Fentanyl Act.
My Stop the Import of Fentanyl Act will create a National Center dedicated to combating the import and distribution of fentanyl and other illicit synthetic drugs. This legislation will help us tackle the opioid epidemic by holding drug cartels accountable, consolidating national efforts to stop drug trafficking, and protecting families across Colorado and the nation. Thank you, Brittany Pettersen
