John, I was outraged at the news out of Kansas City last week. On Thursday, 16-year-old Ralph Yarl went to pick up his younger brothers at a home not far from where he lived. He accidentally went to the wrong house, and when he rang the doorbell, he was shot twice.
Luckily, Ralph survived and is in stable condition. I thank God he is still with us today, but no child deserves the trauma he has been through.
The devastating shooting of Ralph Yarl sheds light on two major issues facing America today. The first is the prevalence of guns in the hands of irresponsible people willing to shoot first and ask questions later. The second is the continued racial biases against young Black men and teens who are quickly perceived as threats – even when it’s just a 16-year-old kid picking up his siblings.
When I first heard the news, my mind immediately went to my son Jordan. He was nearly the same age as Ralph when he was shot and killed in 2012. He was doing something just as innocuous, playing music with his friends while stopped at a gas station.
And both these young Black men were shot at by someone who had no business using a firearm.
This week, the parents of Black men and teens around the country are speaking to their children to warn them of the dangers they face because of the color of their skin. John, it shouldn’t have to be this way.
Yesterday the Clay County prosecutor publicly identified the shooter and announced that he had been charged. He said what many of us already knew: “There was a racial component to the case.”
Ralph Yarl deserves justice for what he’s been through. And the rest of America deserves to live in a country that’s safe from our reckless gun laws.
This starts with putting in place meaningful legislation that prevents gun violence. I’m continuing to lead the fight for change in Congress, and I hope you’ll join me in my efforts.
Onward,
