Immigration News Digest

  • All eyes on the border: Title 42 is scheduled to end on May 11, and experts and legal practitioners are anxiously waiting to see what comes next. Various news outlets have raised concerns that the Biden Administration might revive family detention, Trump's transit ban, and other egregious policies designed to hurt asylum seekers and keep them from accessing legal protections in the United States.
  • Healthcare options for DACA recipients: The Biden Administration recently announced that they would be supporting expanding Medicaid eligibility to include DACA recipients. These new rules have not been formally proposed or adopted yet but are expected to come out by the end of the month. The DACA program remains in legal jeopardy due to ongoing litigation, and many individuals are still barred from applying for DACA for the first time DACA due to nationwide court orders.
  • Texas HB20 would potentially legitimize armed vigilante groups on the border: In Texas, far-right legislators have introduced a bill that would "deputize" individuals to join a new "Border Protection Unit" which would have private citizens given the power to question and arrest anyone suspected of being undocumented. Immigration activists are denouncing the bill and calling on community members to speak out - follow local groups like RAICES to learn more!
