John,
Social media is hurting our democracy, dividing people across the country, and fostering a dangerous climate that threatens our youth and national security.
And we, alongside our Council for Responsible Social Media, released new polling that shows an overwhelming majority of Americans across the political spectrum agree and want Congress to take action to reform social media.
Check out our poll’s findings.
The poll found that a majority of Americans hold social media accountable for a range of negative effects and strongly support federal legislation that increases transparency, ensures privacy, and protects children.
According to the poll, 8 in 10 Americans hold social media responsible for bullying, childhood mental health struggles, and the spreading of false information and conspiracy theories.
Additionally, just 7 out of 100 Americans see social media’s impact on children as more positive than negative. Put another way, that’s a 7% approval rating for Big Tech’s protection of children.
Our poll makes one thing very clear: the public wants social media platforms to be held accountable and for Congress to pass legislation that sets higher standards for these companies.
It’s time for action to create a healthier social media environment and find solutions to the harms to our kids, communities, and national security posed by these platforms.
