This isn’t a fix we can make overnight

The Arctic is headed toward a full-on toxic meltdown, John.

For decades, everything from aggressive drilling practices and invasive mining explorations to risky military base testing has been fair game in the icy northern tundra — in large part because we thought permafrost (a.k.a. the frozen layer of rock and soil) trapped the hazardous radiological material, heavy metals, insecticides, and fuels our exploits have left behind.

Big mistake.

A new paper out of the Nature Communications journal estimates between 13,000 and 20,000 contaminated sites are spread across Arctic permafrost regions. And worse yet: 3,500 to 5,200 of those sites are in areas that’ll be affected by thawing land before the end of the century.

This is a ticking time bomb of epic proportions, John. When this layer of permafrost melts, we’ll be unleashing multiple decades’ worth of hazardous waste into our air and water supply.

Our SEEC Members are in Congress fighting to implement sweeping regulations for oil and gas drilling while championing clean energy solutions, but this isn’t a fix they can make overnight.

That’s why we’re counting on your support to help us take back the House in 2024. With a clean majority focused on reversing these alarming trends and holding Big Oil and Gas companies (and their Republican beneficiaries like Kevin McCarthy) accountable, we can prevent this time bomb from erupting. Will you join their fight by making a contribution of any amount today?

This time bomb, should it go off, will spell environmental catastrophe for us. Time is running out, but that doesn’t mean we plan to accept this dire fate.

With your help, our Members can get the aggressive planet-saving solutions we desperately need signed into law. Are you with us?

Onward,

SEEC PAC

Thanks to your help in 2022, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 118th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future.
