Dear John,
What happened in Tennessee earlier this month was a chilling wake up call. Two Black legislators ejected by Republicans from the state House for protesting its inaction on gun violence in the wake of yet another deadly mass shooting.
And it’s not just Tennessee. In Wisconsin, narrowly elected state Senator Dan Knodl just gave the state GOP a supermajority capable of impeaching Democratic state officials like Governor Tony Evers or recently elected Supreme Court Justice Janet Protasiewicz.
And in North Carolina, the GOP legislative supermajority has announced its plans to hold mid-decade redistricting (a.k.a. gerrymandering), even though it’s banned by the state constitution.
Meanwhile a supermajority in Florida has passed a new rule limiting citizens’ rights to speak up against proposals with which they disagree to just 30 seconds.
The modern Republican Party doesn’t care about democracy -- it is rapidly becoming the American fascist party. Watch our latest video to learn more about this growing threat, and share it with your friends.
My friend, Democracy is about means. Under it, citizens don’t have to agree on ends (abortion, health care, guns, or whatever else we disagree about) as long as we agree on democratic means for handling our disagreements.
But for many Republicans, the ends justify whatever means they choose -- including expelling lawmakers, rigging elections through gerrymandering, refusing to raise the debt ceiling, and denying the outcome of a legitimate presidential election.
The Republican Party is only committed to maintaining its own power. Nothing more, nothing less.
Authoritarianism is not just an external threat. It's right here in America. Watch and share our latest video now to help raise the alarm.
Thank you for your continued efforts to protest this radicalism in the streets, and to punish it at the ballot box.
