Psychiatric Services Medicaid Reimbursement
In a paper published this month, Jane Zhu and colleagues compare Medicaid fee-for-service reimbursement rates for mental health services delivered by psychiatrists and benchmark Medicaid reimbursement rates to those of Medicare.

Using publicly available Medicaid fee-for-service schedules from state Medicaid agency websites in 2022, the authors demonstrate wide variation in mental health reimbursement rates for psychiatrists across states, with payments in the lowest- and highest-paying states differing by more than fivefold.

Their results also show reimbursement for mental health services continues to lag that of Medicare and that there is no strong correlation between Medicaid reimbursement rates and the number of Medicaid-participating psychiatrists per 10,000 enrollees.

Zhu and colleagues’ analysis helps inform policy options that leverage reimbursement as a way to expand access to mental health professionals. "Policies focusing solely on increasing reimbursement may be insufficient to improve enrollees’ access to mental health services," they conclude.
