Hi Greens!
So...how was your first month of 2020? Whew! We've had a big start to a big year: opposing Trump's reckless aggression against Iran and Iraq, setting the stage for our 2020 presidential campaign and fighting back against an early fusillade of smears from the corporate party power structure.
Our appreciation and support goes out to all of the Greens braving the winter cold to gather at peace demonstrations, rally for the climate, and doing early field work for campaigns. Campaigns are won through preparation!
And speaking of preparation, it's never too early to prepare for the 2020 Green Party Annual National Meeting and Presidential Nominating Convention! <[link removed]>This year's gathering will take place in Detroit, Michigan at Wayne State University from July 9-12 — mark your calendars now and keep an eye on this page for February announcements <[link removed]> about registration, lodging, workshops and more!
The theme for this year is Climate Justice, Social Justice, Economic Democracy — three principles that are essential to both finding solutions to the crises we face and overcoming the power structure that blocks the reforms we need.
We must be bold in our thinking and fierce in our campaigning, for the two-party cartel is as desperate as it is vulnerable — it will use the nightmare of Trump to constrain political possibilities as much as we let them. We must keep fighting for multi-party democracy as the first step toward Grassroots Democracy!
Fight smart, keep training and lift each other up. We got this!
- Michael O'Neil, GreenLine Editor and Green Party Communications Manager
Before we get to our national convention, however, we need to have state conventions! After all, our affiliated state Green Parties need to choose who will represent them as delegates to the national convention.
Thanks to Green Party national Web Manager David Doonan, you can see state convention dates as they're announced at gp.org/2020_state_conventions <[link removed]>. Don't see your state listed there? Send a note to

Washington has already held theirs, and Ohio and Illinois have conventions scheduled for February. Greens Assemble!
Can't wait until then? Well, you can also gather with Greens online this Tuesday night during our "Green Party Watch Party" of Trump's (🤢) State of the Union Address.
We'll simulcast the address on our Facebook Page <[link removed]> while looking for your LIVE comments and ripostes to the president's repugnant propaganda talking points.
Then we'll livestream a response from Greens to cut through the evening's lies and break down the REAL state of the union and what we need to do about it.
So ditch the corporate media "spin rooms" and duopoly party talking heads and make a night of it with your Green fam 📺!

Greens In Wisconsin and Maine Make the News by Speaking Out Against War With Iran
WORT — Madison, WI radio: "Protesters say, 'No War in Iran'" <[link removed]>
...Dave Schwab, a member of the Green Party, says that Trump was aided by members of both parties who, quote, “handed him a loaded gun with the safety off” by passing a $738 billion defense spending bill for 2020 without restricting the use of military force in Iran.
“I think that most Americans are against these wars, and yet they’re stuck in a two-party trap which gives them no other option, and people just accept that, but I think people need to demand more and say, ‘If you’re going to continue giving trillions of dollars to kill people in the Middle East, then we’re just not going to vote for you’,” Schwab says.
In July, the House voted to pass an amendment from California Congressman Ro Khanna to the National Defense Authorization Act.

WGME — Portland, ME: Maine protestors voice concern following air strike in Iraq <[link removed]>
The protesters created signs and stood on the corner waving to drivers passing by on Congress Street.
U.S. Senate Green candidate Lisa Savage <[link removed]>attended the protest.
She says the tension between the U.S, Iran and Iraq have gone on for decades, under multiple presidents, and that there needs to be a check in power.
"Congress has for the past 20 years or so has not been doing their duty of overseeing the war making powers of the executive branch of government," said Savage.

GPNY Leaders Connect With Youth Leadership on Climate
Jim McCabe, Green Party of New York secretary and Gloria Mattera, GPNY & Green Party National Co-chair joined Alexandria Villaseñor (co-founder of US Youth Climate Strike and founder of Earth Uprising) on a chilly January morning at her weekly School Strike 4 Climate Friday. Alexandria has taken time from school every Friday morning since December 2018 as part of the world-wide student movement Fridays4Future.
Baltimore Sun Publishes Green's Call For Democracy in Filling Vacant Elected Offices <[link removed]>
"Shortly after Congressman Elijah Cummings passed away, Gov. Larry Hogan announced a special election to fill the remainder of his term. In the United States House of Representatives, all members must be elected by the voters. It is inconceivable that we would simply allow Democratic Party insiders to choose Mr. Cummings’ replacement.
It should be equally inconceivable to allow party appointments to the Maryland House of Delegates. The unfortunate reality, however, is that nearly 20% of the members of the General Assembly were appointed by their party when they first took office. This number will increase in the very near future..."

Frida Berrigan on New London, CT campaign: "Sometimes We Make Our Own Hope" <[link removed]>
"On Tuesday, November 7th, when the polls opened at six in the morning, it was cold and clear. It rained hard through the middle of the day. When those polls closed at eight that night, it was warmer and humid, but no longer raining. I was outside all day, rain or (not quite) shine, moving between the three polling stations with my friends and our signs and our cards that explained how to “Write In Frida for Mayor.”
That’s right: I wasn’t just running as a third-party candidate in a Democratic town, but as one not even on the ballot. The state had lost my paperwork. The Green Party hired a lawyer and sued, but the judge ruled against us and declined to order the secretary of state to put my name on the ballot. That setback made an uphill campaign into an Everest. I embraced the climb. Being a pacifist and an activist means that lost causes are par for the course for me and, as a Catholic, I believe hard work is its own reward."

JAN 06, 2020 Greens Speak in the streets and to Congress: No War With Iran, Troops Out of Iraq, Repeal the War Powers Act <[link removed]>
The Green Party of the United States has joined allies in the peace movement throughout the country in vigorous opposition to a U.S. war with Iran, participating in public protests on Saturday and launching an online drive to demand Congress prevent Trump from further hostilities against Iran and its people.
The Green Party’s online campaign to call Congress can be found at gp.org/iran-action <[link removed]>, where allies can find contact information for their congressional representatives and assistance on what to say.
Greens joined demonstrations in at least 80 cities in 38 states over the weekend in response to the assassination of Iranian Major General Qassim Suleimani on Iraqi soil, which the Green Party has called an act of war and an unconscionable escalation of hostilities in a region where the U.S. has already wreaked immense devastation over decades.CONTINUE READING... <[link removed]>
