On February 26, A’i Cofan leader Eduardo Mendúa was shot and killed after returning from a national meeting of Indigenous representatives. Eduardo, who came from a community living with the legacy of oil pollution, was working to block the latest expansion of oil drilling in Ecuador’s Amazon and protect remaining rainforest.
Send a message to President Lasso of Ecuador demanding justice for Eduardo Mendúa and protection for Indigenous Earth Defenders in the Amazon!
Eduardo’s murder reflects a deterioration of respect for Indigenous rights and continued violence against Earth Defenders.
During his last meeting with Indigenous leaders, they announced their decision to cut off dialogue with the Ecuadorian government due to the increased repression of Indigenous communities resisting extractive industries in their territories.
