John,
Some time back, we shared with you the exciting news that the North Carolina Supreme Court struck down the state’s 2018 voter ID law, finding that the law was “formulated with an impermissible intent to discriminate against African American voters in violation of the N.C. Constitution.”
That was the right result – but now the North Carolina Supreme Court has voted to “rehear” the case and is poised to reverse its decision and uphold the law.
What happened? The facts didn’t change, and the law didn’t change.
The only thing that changed is the composition of the court – in November, Republican candidates won both Supreme Court races, taking the court from a 4-3 Democratic majority to a 5-2 GOP majority.
Here at Power the Vote, we’re outraged. The fact is, voter ID laws hurt minority, poor, and elderly voters without doing anything to prevent cases of “voter fraud” that the GOP is fixated on addressing. As North Carolina Democratic Party Chair Anderson Clayton put it, “Voter ID is a solution in search of a problem.”
The North Carolina Supreme Court’s flip-flop is a political power grab, and a continuation of Republicans’ efforts to intentionally suppress Black votes.
We’re not sitting on the sidelines – we know we can’t trust this court to do the right thing, so we’re funding voter protection staff in North Carolina who are working to mobilize an army of volunteers to fight for voters and help them overcome barriers to voting.
If you’re with us in the mission to support our democracy, donate to Power the Vote today and help us empower North Carolina voters to unseat anti-democratic politicians in the coming years. [[link removed]]
Support from people like you is what powers our work to create a more robust, better functioning democracy in key battleground states – including North Carolina.
Thanks,
Power the Vote
We Fund Voter Protection
In 2020, we ran the Democratic Party’s Voter Protection Program in Georgia, when the state flipped blue for the first time in nearly 30 years.
We pioneered a new model of voter protection, built on sustained investments and long-lasting relationships.
Now, we’re building on that success and adapting the Georgia model to fight voter suppression in other states.
