ProPublica revealed yet another layer in Clarence Thomas and MAGA mega donor Harlan Crow’s relationship—one that could be illegal. Reporting shows that Crow bought and currently owns the house that Thomas grew up in and where Thomas’s mother currently lives for free. Crow also paid for tens of thousands of dollars in renovations to the home, saying that he intends to eventually make the house a public museum. Whether or not Crow intends to found the Clarence Thomas Museum of Deceit and Sedition (or whatever he really wants to call it) is beside the point. Up until now, Thomas’s actions were grossly unethical. But not disclosing his real estate deals with Harlan Crow? According to a federal disclosure law passed after Watergate, that’s illegal. Renewed calls for investigating Thomas have been going on since the 2020 presidential election (you know, the one his wife, Ginni Thomas, tried to overturn the results of). But throughout his tenure on the highest court in the land, Thomas has consistently abused his position—from failing to recuse himself on cases involving his seditious wife to now accepting millions of dollars worth of undisclosed gifts. You know how they say no news is good news? With a new detail about Clarence’s unethical behavior coming to light nearly every day, we’re probably in for even worse ethical violations ahead. But it’s not just Clarence Thomas we need to worry about. Justices Alito and Kavanaugh have all had their unethical actions scrutinized in the past few years, but nothing has been done to hold them accountable either. We’re beyond tired of congressional inaction, and we bet you are too. In a recent poll, 69% of voters say they support instituting a formal ethics code for the Supreme Court to ensure justices would be investigated if they are accused of an ethics violation. Thanks for all that you do. Sami and Chloe
