The Quarterly Highlights is a snapshot of Solidarity Center programs and organizational activities. The Solidarity Center works around the globe helping workers build collective voice and more just societies through organizing and advocacy.

** SUMMIT FOR DEMOCRACY: NO DEMOCRACY WITHOUT UNIONS
------------------------------------------------------------
The first Summit for Democracy event in Africa ([link removed]) , held in March and co-hosted by the Multilateral Partnership for Organizing, Worker Empowerment and Rights (M-POWER ([link removed]) ) and the Zambian Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), brought together labor leaders who underscored how unions can strengthen and advance democracy through worker rights. ** HAITI: UNIONS PLAY IMPORTANT ROLE IN RESTORING $1 MILLION TO GARMENT WORKERS

Union activism was integral in getting $1 million in back wages and benefits ([link removed]) restored to garment workers in Haiti after they were left jobless when their factory suddenly closed in December.

** KYRGYZSTAN: WINNING PROTECTION AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE
------------------------------------------------------------

Unions and working women celebrated the publication of a draft law ([link removed]) to ratify ILO Convention 190 to eliminate work-related violence and harassment, the result of a three-year campaign with the Solidarity Center to educate government officials, labor inspectors, unions and the public on the international treaty.

** BRAZIL: COMMUNITIES & UNIONS WIN VICTORY FOR LIVELIHOODS, DEMOCRACY

Brazilian communities along the Tocantins River near the Amazon are celebrating a decision to halt a blasting and dredging project ([link removed]) that could destroy their livelihoods and severely damage the environment.

** NIGERIA: DECENT WORK INACCESSIBLE TO MOST WORKERS WITH DISABILITIES

A new report by workers with disability, Securing Equal Access to Decent Work in Nigeria ([link removed]) , is the first of its kind for its sample size and breadth, as well as for the collaboration between trade unions and disability rights organizations.

The global labor movement lost a pioneering leader on January 16 when Myrtle Witbooi ([link removed]) , general secretary of the South African Domestic Service and Allied Workers Union ([link removed]) (SADSAWU) and president of the International Domestic Workers Federation ([link removed]) (IDWF), passed away after a valiant battle with cancer.
