Tomorrow morning at 10 a.m., a chilling wail of a siren will reverberate throughout the state of Israel, commemorating the systematic murder of 6 million Jews by the Nazis. At that point, every sort of human endeavor, any movement, all traffic on the highways will grind to a complete halt. We stop— to remember with that chill, haunting shrill in the air. We stop to remember that remarkable generation, some still walking and living among us with numbers tattooed on their arms. So many of whom had witnessed the total horror and absolute devastation of their lives, their families, their communities, their loved ones—which was the Holocaust. We remember their tenacity, their strength, and their courage. Courage to begin again anew. Courage to create new families, and to return to the ancestral, indigenous homeland of our people.
We stop to remember how the Nazis tried to eradicate our names, our identities, our culture, and replace them with numbers. We stop to remember how many of those courageous people, including one million and a half children are scattered in mass graves without names throughout Europe.
We stop to remember why we have the state of Israel; why the Jewish people need national sovereignty; why, especially now, with Iran assiduously working towards a nuclear bomb and another genocide of our people, Israel has got to remain strong. Forever.
Zachor. Never forget.
