Over the weekend news broke that a 16-year-old in Kansas City was
shot.
All he did was show up at the wrong home.
He rang the doorbell at the wrong address.
In our line of work, organizing is all about talking to our
neighbors, and knocking on doors.
While our work continues, in the last few years the real threat of
gun violence exists as a notion that we have to consider.
If we are at the wrong house, or speaking to the wrong people, does
their distrust of our presence mean that a gun is their response? Is
it now the responsibility of every passerby in a neighborhood to
suspect that a shooting may be an appropriate response?
Our national, cultural obsession with guns is costing innocent lives
every single day.
Action on gun reform and legislation is not a want - it is a must.
There is no more room for countless tragedies in our hearts.
