Dear John - Three years ago, President Trump took one of his first actions as president that would also go down as one of his worst. In a shocking break from American tradition of welcoming refugees, the administration issued a sweeping order banning travelers and most asylum seekers from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the country. Although the ban was challenged in the courts and eventually modified, it has had the effect of separating thousands of U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents from their children[1]. Despite the activism of amazing supporters, like you, the administration has continued to wage a relentless battle to steadily erode the number of refugees and asylum seekers the United States allows to resettle in our country. In fact, yesterday the Trump administration announced an expansion of the travel ban to cover an additional six countries[2]. We must again speak out and let Congress and the president know that we oppose efforts to prevent the world’s most vulnerable children and families from seeking safety here. Please send a message to your senators asking them to support a resolution urging the president to restore higher refugee admissions and protect the rights of asylum seekers. This strong resolution recognizes that there are more than 25 million refugees worldwide, most of them children. These children are in extremely dangerous places like Syria, where conflict has driven Masa* to a makeshift shelter after her home was shelled and destroyed. Even her school was attacked. The safety of children, like Masa, hangs in the balance. Yet in spite of the massive need for leadership to provide safety for those fleeing war and violence, the Trump administration set a record-low refugee admissions goal in fiscal year 2019 of only 18,000 individuals. This is unacceptable. We must continue to speak out against it. Please send a message today! Thank you for being a voice for kids, |
