John,
Recently, a federal judge in Texas delivered yet another blow to reproductive freedom in America through a court ruling that actively takes rights away from Americans.
This conservative judge made the unprecedented decision to invalidate the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of mifepristone, a commonly used abortion pill that was first approved by the FDA more than two decades ago.
It’s the most consequential attack on reproductive choice since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last summer, and it leaves the fate of birth control and other reproductive health care at risk.
Despite its record of being safer to take than everyday drugs like ibuprofen (Advil), acetaminophen (Tylenol), penicillin, and Viagra, mifepristone could become inaccessible for millions of Americans as soon as Thursday.
We know this isn’t about safety. It’s a blatant attack on reproductive choice and women’s health. Not only is mifepristone used in about 50% of abortions across the country, but it’s also used in cases of miscarriage.
That’s why my administration is urgently taking action to stockpile mifepristone for upwards of three years, and our legislative session just passed three bills to increase abortion access and privacy.
Here in Maryland, abortion, including abortion medication like mifepristone, remains legal and accessible in our state. The right to choose is exactly that — a right. And in our Maryland, we will always defend that right.
Unfortunately, if someone like my previous far-right opponent was elected to this seat, we risk losing that right. As long as I’m your governor, I will protect abortion access. If you can, make a grassroots contribution to support our pro-choice campaign for the long-haul today.
