Ralph Yarl, a 16-year-old Black boy, was shot twice in Kansas City, Missouri after accidentally ringing the doorbell of the wrong house. After being shot, Ralph had to run to three different homes before someone finally agreed to help him.
This is yet another example of the pervasive anti-Black violence we see across this country every single day. While Ralph is recovering, the trauma that he and his family will endure will be long and painful. We have heard this story many times over — and the painful truth is that most Black boys and men do not survive these racist encounters.
This was no accident or mistake. This was a hate crime, deeply rooted in white supremacy. Reports further indicate that the white man who was taken into police custody was released shortly after without being charged — another example of how pervasive white supremacy is in all of our existing systems.
Ralph deserves to live in a country where he and other Black boys and men do not need to worry about whether or not they will survive a simple door knock.
That's why today, we're asking if you can support Ralph Yarl's GoFundMe to cover his medical bills and recovery. Any additional funds will be used for college expenses, where Ralph plans to major in chemical engineering.
