Earlier this month, a Texas Trump-appointed District Judge, Matthew Kacsmaryk, suspended the FDA's approval of mifepristone, a critical drug used in medication abortions and miscarriages.

On April 12th, the 5th Circuit placed the complete suspension on hold, but also allowed other restrictions set by Judge Kacsmaryk to move forward, including making the mailing of mifepristone illegal. Attorney General Merrick Garland says the Justice Department “will be seeking emergency relief from the Supreme Court to defend the FDA’s scientific judgment and protect Americans’ access to safe and effective reproductive care."

Mifepristone is safe and effective. Yet, PhRMA, the pharmaceutical industry’s largest and biggest-spending lobbying association, continues to stand on the sidelines, re-issuing only a cut and paste statement from before the ruling was even announced that rather tepidly supports the Food and Drug Administration.

It seems PhRMA is happy to throw its weight around to protect its bottom line when it comes to profits and price-gouging, but now that lives are on the line, PhRMA is nowhere to be found.
