Click here John, On January 16th, the State Supreme Court gave the Legislature a clear message – to tackle the climate crisis, the state needs additional authority under the Clean Air Act. In response, Senator Reuven Carlyle and Representative Joe Fitzgibbon introduced an update to our state’s foundational air law. This policy, the Clean Air Act Update bill (HB 2892/SB 6628), would provide a critical tool for the state to address our longstanding climate crisis. Please contact your legislators NOW and urge them to vote yes on the Clean Air Act Update bill. The decision by the Supreme Court creates a crucial turning point for our state. Even though the largest sellers and distributors of fossil fuels account for a huge amount of our state’s climate pollution, the Court held that the state does not have authority to regulate them for the pollution they profit from. This decision could not have come at a better time to take action. HB 2892 and SB 6628 would enable the Department of Ecology to regulate greenhouse gas emissions associated with those fossil fuel sellers and distributors, updating our state's ability to tackle climate pollution. The role of the Legislature is to pass and update laws: Now is the chance to update the Clean Air Act for the 21st Century and ensure that the state has all the tools it needs to address the climate crisis.
