Here are 3 reasons why we need to legalize marijuana the right way:

#1 – In 2021, more than 170,000 people were still arrested for marijuana possession. A single arrest – even without a conviction – can negatively impact access to housing, jobs, school, and more.

#2 – Due to targeted enforcement, 4 out of 5 of those sentenced for federal marijuana charges are Black or Latinx, despite using drugs at a similar rate to white people.

#3 – Drug laws are still often rooted in fear and stigma, not science. We need to follow the evidence and put people’s health and well-being first.

Thanks to decades of advocacy from DPA, we have seen substantial progress at the local, state, and federal levels to stop treating drug use as a criminal problem. That’s why it’s critical that we keep the momentum to legalize marijuana the right way—with equity and justice at the forefront. This 4/20, let’s send a message that we won’t accept anything less!
