Ursula Mamlok – Movements

A cinematic portrait of the late German-Jewish composer Ursula Mamlok, by Anne Berrini: in her documentary Ursula Mamlok - Movements, filmmaker Anne Berrini offers a sensitive examination of Mamlok's life, and of the music that played such a central part in it. As a teenager, Mamlok fled from the Nazis, arrived in New York after traveling across three continents, and became one of her generation’s visionary composers. In Movements, Berrini observes Mamlok at work in Germany and accompanies her on a trip to New York City, where Mamlok prepares for a League of Composers concert, meets old friends, and revisits a critically important period of her life. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Miro Magloire, composer, choreographer, and artistic director of New Chamber Ballet.

The bauhaus.photo exhibition has been extended until the closing event on February 26, 2020, at 6:30pm at the Goethe-Institut Washington, accompanied by a book presentation by Elizabeth Otto of her two publications Bauhaus Women and Haunted Bauhaus, with a subsequent Q&A by Bibiana Obler of George Washington University.

bauhaus.photo: A Special Selection of Photos from the Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin features a special selection of key works from the collection of more than 70,000 Bauhaus photos held by the Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung in Berlin – the largest such collection in the world. The exhibition provides an impressive insight into the many facets of Bauhaus photography and life at the Bauhaus.

Expressionisms: Germany and the United States

“Expressionism and Spirituality”: among the diverse descriptive labels attached to the art of Fritz Ascher, perhaps none is more evocative and distinct than "expressionist." In the context of visual art, that term has, over the past century and a half, connoted the articulation of strong emotion - through color, brush work, and the aggressive representation of figures and the elements of nature. This discussion will consider ways in which these features, particularly in painting, can explore and have explored embodying emotion and provoking it in the viewer. Also discussed will be the relationships of political identity, the workings of the unconscious mind, and the realm of the spiritual to the work of Ascher and other important artists, before and contemporary, with him, both in Europe and the United States.

Volunteer Opportunity | Deadline February 10, 2020

American Volunteers Sought for International Volunteer Program!

Attention all Americans 18 and over! Aktion Sühnezeichen Friedensdienste (ASF) is seeking American volunteers (18 years +) for their international volunteer program in Germany between September 2020 and August 2021. Participants serve at Holocaust memorial sites (Buchenwald, Dachau, Sachsenhausen, for example) and social service providers. They take part in seminars, and have an opportunity to visit memorials such as Oświęcim/Auschwitz, learn about everyday life in modern Germany, expand their German skills, and set a sign for peace and democratic values.

The ASF offers to volunteers simple housing and monthly allowance to cover basic needs, as well as health, accident, and civil liability insurance.
