Republican mega-donor Harlan Crow bought a string of properties in Georgia owned by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and his family, according to a new report from ProPublica – the second exposé in just two weeks shining a light on alleged misconduct by Thomas. The properties include the home where Thomas’ mother lives, which Crow has renovated.

Here’s the thing: Thomas didn’t disclose the sale of his properties to his billionaire friend, even though there’s a federal law requiring justices to disclose all real estate transactions over $1,000 (except for their own primary residence, which none of these was).

Thomas was able to get away with this because there’s no referee to ensure Supreme Court justices bother to follow the rules. No ref; no rules.

It’s time for an enforceable and honest code of conduct at the Court, particularly where it involves right-wing billionaires and dark-money influence. Accountability matters.

My legislation would create an enforceable code of ethics for the Supreme Court, and bring the justices into line with other judges and federal officials. Remember, Crow is the same billionaire who footed the bill for Thomas on luxury yacht excursions — including a single vacation worth half a million dollars — and provided Thomas frequent use of his private jet. All undisclosed.

Public confidence in the Court is plummeting as the American people wonder: What else don’t we know about who is quietly paying to influence Supreme Court justices? We need to fix this.
