Team, by now you’ve probably heard of the so-called “independent state legislature theory.”
It’s a far-right, fringe legal idea that is now central to a case before the United States Supreme Court. Commentators warn the theory could “upend elections” or even “mean the end of democracy.” That’s because it could give Republican state legislatures unchecked power to:
❌ Gerrymander maps to guarantee unearned Republican majorities.
❌ Pass voting restrictions without being held accountable – even if the laws violate the state constitution!
❌ Undermine presidential elections.
We’re already seeing the potential consequences play out, team.
Last year, in a huge win for democracy, North Carolina’s highest court issued rulings protecting voting rights and upholding fair maps. But now, Republicans are trying to circumvent those rulings – simply because the composition of the state has changed.
Attorney General Eric Holder has warned that if state legislatures are allowed to ignore court rulings they don’t care for, it would “put our system of checks and balances at risk” all across the country.
He’s right – and that’s why we’re asking our grassroots supporters to help us show that the American people stand for the principles of our democracy and against this extreme ideology. Will you add your name?
