Our oceans are one of our planet’s biggest buffers against climate change. But as we continue casting ridiculous amounts of carbon (and subsequently, rising temperatures) into our environment, we’re pushing past the ocean’s capacity to mitigate our damage to the climate.
And right now, marine life is bearing the brunt of our climate actions.
Over the past year, countless species of marine life have been washing up on beaches around the world. From whales and dolphins in New Jersey to dead penguins in New Zealand, researchers have been working tirelessly to identify the common denominator that’s taken out so many of our sea dwellers.
Their consensus? We're the problem.
Once again, our greenhouse gas emissions are to blame. More emissions lead to rising air temperatures. Rising air temperatures create warmer waters, and warmer waters mean less oxygen in our oceans — and in turn, uninhabitable ecosystems for our marine life.
The fight to cut carbon emissions has pushed beyond the brink of wishful thinking, John.
A 2021 study found that one third of all marine animals could vanish within 30 years if we don’t act now — we are literally at a do-or-die point for marine life.
Thanks to your help in 2022, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 118th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future. But if you'd like to receive fewer emails, we understand. You can click here to only get our most important messages, or you can unsubscribe.
