Dear John

We’re excited to share with you that we’re an official partner of The Big Help Out, a nationwide volunteering event to mark the King’s coronation on Saturday 6 May.

As part of this, we're launching Hedgelife Help Out, your opportunity to help us build a picture of the health of our country's hedgerows throughout the month of May. Read on to find out how you can get involved.

Did you know that today marks the start of International Dark Skies Week? We’ve been busy crunching the numbers from the Star Counts you did back in February and will be sharing the results with you very soon. In the meantime, scroll down to find out how you can help take action on light pollution.

With warmer and lighter days now ahead of us, we hope you get to spend some quality time enjoying all the benefits nature has to offer. Nature writer Alexandra Pearce-Broomhead shares what wildlife to look out for in your local countryside and green spaces this month.

Join in with Hedgelife Help Out

Between 1-31 May, join in with Hedgelife Help Out by filling out a short questionnaire on a hedgerow in your local area. We will use the information you send us to build up a picture of hedgerows across the country and how they can be improved. It'll also be a fun activity whether you choose to do it solo or with friends, family or your local community. Sign up below and show your support for hedgerows!

Take action on light pollution this International Dark Skies Week

Dark, starry skies are a special feature of our countryside. But as light pollution has increased, many of us are no longer enjoying truly dark skies – and it’s having a negative impact on the wildlife that rely on darkness, too. We need to show our MPs that acting to reduce light pollution and increasing dark skies will be better for people, nature and the climate. If you haven’t already, can you take a moment to email your MP?

Groundbreaking report: 91% in rural areas see homelessness rise

A new report shows that the countryside is beset by a ‘hidden homelessness’ crisis driven by soaring housing costs and a gaping shortfall in local authority funding. This year-long study was commissioned by English Rural and co-funded by a coalition of rural charities and housing associations (including CPRE). Click below to read the report in full.

Wildlife to watch out for in April

As warmth settles over the landscape in April, nature begins to spring into life. From the emergence of bluebells to bats, water voles, and skylarks like the one pictured, read on to find out what wildlife you might encounter in your local countryside or green space this month.

Become a regular giver and secure a better future for our countryside

Together, we’ve already achieved some great victories for our precious green spaces - from forcing planning u-turns, to keeping fracking off the table and standing up for our hedgerows. Could you help us go that step further by setting up a regular gift today? Our vision is a thriving, beautiful countryside for everyone to enjoy. And with your support, we can turn this vision into reality.

Best wishes,

Cat
