We stand with Tennessee Rep. Jones and Rep. Pearson.
Dear Friend,
Late last month, the Nashville community was left devastated when a mass shooter entered a school and took the lives of three children and three adults. The shooter had documented mental health issues, was under the care of a doctor, and still obtained multiple firearms. This senseless act of gun violence should not have happened.
Tennessee House members Justin Jones, Justin Pearson, and Gloria Johnson tried to take action, leading a peaceful protest on the House floor, and Republicans retaliated by calling for their expulsion. Ultimately, the House Republicans elected to expel only Rep. Jones and Rep. Pearson, who are Black, but not Rep. Johnson, who is white.
The actions taken by the GOP members were undemocratic and our thoughts are summed up perfectly by New York Attorney General Tish James:
Both Reps. Pearson and Jones have since been reinstated — and the Tennessee House once again has these two representatives who are willing to go the extra mile to make communities safer from gun violence.
