BAKER | The continued contradictory orders of various courts—this time, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington and the Fifth Circuit—have brought the case for mifepristone to the Supreme Court this week, where Friday Justice Alito issued an administrative stay of the Fifth Circuit’s ruling until Wednesday, April 19 to give the Court time to review the petitions. 

In Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Supreme Court said that “the authority to regulate abortion must be returned to the people and their elected representatives.” The states before the Washington court have voted to keep abortion legal and accessible. It remains to be seen if the Supreme Court really meant what they said.

BY SAADIA VAN WINKLE and JHUMPA BHATTACHARYA | The current U.S. tax code is an outdated system that does not benefit or reflect the needs of our modern society’s social structures or increasingly diverse demographics. Among those it costs the most: single women, married Black couples and gay couples.

Research finds women who are single and without children are America’s happiest and healthiest group. But thanks to our antiquated and heteronormative tax code, they’re also financially penalized. It’s time for our tax code to reflect our reality.
