Sarah hasn't seen her son since she fled her home in Tigray, Ethiopia due to violent conflict. Since then, she has endured unimaginable hardships as a refugee, including being held captive in a Libyan prison, where prisoners endured daily beatings.
Sarah is one of the many displaced people that Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)'s search and rescue vessel, the Geo Barents, rescued from the Central Mediterranean Sea in 2022. She is safe now—but countless more like her are still in peril.
Eight years of war and chronic shortages of supplies have led to the collapse of Yemen’s health system. Now, the high number of patients seeking treatment at MSF-supported Abs hospital in Hajjah governorate has left hospital staff and essential services overwhelmed.
"We've adapted our support to Abs hospital by extending different departments and increasing bed capacity," said Caroline Ducarme, MSF head of mission in Yemen, "but today we have reached the limit of our capacity to respond—in terms of space, human resources, and supply."
Your generosity makes it possible for us to quickly scale up our work when needs like these increase—we’re relying on you for your support, friend.
Measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world, and though it is 100 percent preventable with vaccines and treatment, access to these lifesaving resources can be difficult—especially for people in lower-income countries.
In Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), for instance, outbreaks of measles occur regularly, every two to three years, and have been the primary reason MSF has responded in DRC for years. In 2022, we vaccinated more than 2 million children and treated over 37,000 patients with measles. But the need to broaden immunization coverage is urgent.
