Dear John,

The ABIM Foundation announced the latest Benson Prize winners this week, and two articles from Health Affairs were selected for their contributions to the literature on medical professionalism:

Hospital Quality Measures in Germany
Studying the German hospital market offers an opportunity to examine the relationship between public reporting and quality improvement in the absence of performance-linked payment incentives.

In their new Health Affairs article, Esra Eren Bayindir and Jonas Schreyögg investigate changes in hospital quality in Germany during the period 2012–19.

The authors find that  low-performing hospitals were more likely than high-performing hospitals to become average quality.

These results suggest that "imposing financial punishment on low performers is not necessary and may hinder quality improvement and aggravate health disparities" and that market forces "are not sufficient to maintain the quality of high-performing hospitals."

Relatedly, an article from the December 2022 issue of Health Affairs covers lessons from Germany for the US health care market.

James Robinson examines Germany’s therapeutic reference pricing for anti-inflammatory biosimilars and identifies changes in cost sharing that could lead to savings for patients.

Elsewhere At Health Affairs
Today in Forefront, Rani Snyder and Terry Fulmer discuss the value of two newly proposed hospital quality measures for the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting Program, and how these measures can improve care for geriatric patients.

Katie Coester and coauthors discuss the twentieth anniversary of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), which, despite its astonishing success, has an insecure future.
