Dear Neighbors,

I hope you?re well. We?re back at the Capitol after our spring recess and have begun to pass budget bills off the House Floor.

This Saturday the 15th, I?m hosting a casual community coffee hour at Dunn Bros on Galaxie Ave. in Apple Valley at 9:00 a.m. I?ll give a brief update on our progress, what?s left to do, and what to expect in these final six weeks. I hope to see you there! I'm also hosting a virtual community coffee hour on April 22nd and will keep you posted with those details.

This week, we passed the Legacy Budget, the Higher Education Budget, and the Democracy for the People Act. Read below to learn more about the House proposals.

*Legacy and Outdoor Heritage Budget*

On Wednesday, the House passed the Legacy [ [link removed] ] budget bill, which invests resources in outdoor heritage, clean water, parks and trails, and arts and cultural heritage. These dedicated funds are made possible by voters who passed the Legacy Amendment in 2008 and are available to continue the important work of restoring, enhancing, and protecting Minnesota?s most treasured spaces, while increasing access for all.

*Free State Park Entry on Earth Day *

Next Saturday, April 22, Minnesota State Parks will have free entry at any park across the state [ [link removed] ]. Our Legacy budget we just passed ensures the continuation of these four free days of public access to parks and trails every year. I?m optimistic and hoping for lots of sunshine and nice weather next weekend!

*Higher Education Budget*

We also passed the Higher Education [ [link removed] ] budget bill this week, which fully funds a tuition freeze at MinnState for two years, addresses the tuition shortfall at the U of M, helps the entire MinnState system address structural deficits, assists all three Tribal colleges with ongoing funds, and invests in the U of M systemwide safety and security.

The higher education budget has faced disinvestment over the last ten years, and this budget aims to make up for underfunding.

*Democracy for the People Act?*

On Thursday, the Minnesota House approved the Democracy for the People Act. [ [link removed] ] The bill protects and strengthens the freedom to vote, reduces the influence of dark money and corporations in our politics, and ensures our democracy is fair, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of Minnesotans across the state. ?

Our state is a leader in national turnout and as Minnesotans, we pride ourselves on the secure accessibility we have to make our voices heard at the polls and in our elections system. The Democracy for the People Act strengthens our voting systems, gives power back to voters, and protects our election workers. It ensures everyone a say in our democracy, no matter where they live or who they support in an election. It also ensures everyone can participate in our democracy.
