Dear Neighbors,

Last week the House took a few days to be with family and friends, to catch our breath, and for some of us, to observe Passover, Easter, or Ramadan. I hope you and your families have had a joyous time.

Over the last few weeks, we?ve been assembling our budget bills, and this week, we began the process of passing budget bills off the floor. In the Commerce Committee (which I Chair), we?ve been hard at work to craft a budget to protect Minnesota?s consumers.?

Here?s an update from Saint Paul.

Passing our First Budget Bills??

This week the House passed its first budget bill, investing in outdoor heritage, clean water, arts, and culture.

In 2008, Minnesota?s voters passed the Clean Water, Land, and Legacy Amendment [ [link removed] ] because all of us want our state to be a great place to live, work, and play. On Tuesday, the House passed legislation investing over $820 million to continue the important work of restoring, enhancing, and protecting Minnesota?s most treasured spaces and places and increasing access for all.

With investments in our outdoor heritage, clean water, parks and trails, and arts and cultural heritage, the 2023 Legacy Budget Bill [ [link removed] ] will make our state a better place to live for current and future generations, including by expanding free parks days and arts and cultural education programs. I am committed to expanding opportunities so all communities can access Legacy funding.

Legacy Investments
House Higher Ed Budget Proposal?

On Wednesday, we passed our proposed Higher Education budget [ [link removed] ]. The bill freezes tuition for two years across the Minnesota State system, which will give students a break from the skyrocketing cost of college.? All of our colleges and universities in Minnesota have been struggling with declining enrollment in recent years, and tuition is a key variable. Our budget prioritizes a higher education system that is accessible, affordable, and effectively building the skilled workforce Minnesota deserves.?

Whether it?s a tuition freeze across the Minnesota State system, addressing the U of M?s tuition shortfall, investing in our tribal colleges, or ensuring today?s students are prepared for tomorrow?s jobs, our Higher Education budget is a crucial component in making Minnesota an Education State.

National Prescription Drug Takeback Day

Next Saturday, April 22nd, is National Prescription Drug Takeback Day. Our communities will have dedicated locations where people can drop off unused prescription drugs so that they can be disposed of safely.

Too often, unused prescription drugs find their way into the wrong hands. That is dangerous and often tragic. That's why it is so important for all of us to clean out our medicine cabinets and turn in - safely and anonymously ? unused prescription drugs.
