This week President Biden’s Administration announced its intention to expand access to healthcare coverage for participants in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, by allowing them to apply for Medicaid and other government funded health insurance programs.
“They’re American in every way except for on paper,” said President Biden. “We need to give Dreamers the opportunities and support they deserve.”
Access to healthcare should be a right, not a privilege and DACA recipients should not be singled out when they are contributing to our country like everyone else. As of September 2022, there are around 600,000 active DACA recipients living in the U.S. who were brought here as children to live and work. The program doesn't currently lead to permanent status but the Biden administration has repeatedly called on Congress to create a pathway to citizenship
