JFI Biweekly Review: April 3-14, 2023 JFI Colleagues, Please see below for the latest updates from JFI. Georgetown University's Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life In-person and Livestreaming Event: Human Dignity and the Migration Crisis at the U.S. Southern Border Responses and Responsibilities The humanitarian crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border has been visible for decades, but it has now reached an unprecedented level of urgency. Political unrest, ecological disasters, economic deprivation, and intensifying violence have resulted in accelerated levels of irregular migration. Various challenges to asylum access imposed by both the Trump and Biden administrations have left thousands of asylum seekers stranded in border cities or attempting risky crossings in remote areas and relying on organized crime groups to smuggle them. These situations, Pope Francis says, happen when “humanity as a whole loses its bearings”; they are a sign that “we have fallen into globalized indifference. We have become used to the suffering of others.” This timely Latino Leader Gathering will examine the moral and human costs of a broken status quo on immigration policy and what obstacles and opportunities exist to build a new approach that upholds human dignity and advances the common good. Four speakers, including Bishop Mark Seitz of the Diocese of El Paso, with differing experiences, expertise, and perspectives will explore how past and current policies have failed and discuss where we need to go in light of Catholic social teaching and our nation’s values to, as Pope Francis has said, “welcome, protect, promote and integrate” migrants and refugees. You are invited to participate in this timely discussion on-line or in person if you are in the DC-metro area. Please RSVP. For more information how someone you know can participate, please visit the art contest website. Center for Migration Studies Webinar: Beyond Title 42: Further Restrictions on the Right to Asylum in the United States Last month, CMS hosted a webinar and discussion, “Beyond Title 42: Further Restrictions on the Right to Asylum in the United States.” Experts discussed the potential humanitarian effects of the new proposed rule that would presume an asylum-seeker is ineligible for asylum due to transit through another country, known as the “asylum ban.” Speakers talked about the proposed rule’s impact on refugees seeking asylum, its use in expedited removal, and how it would affect communities on both sides of the border. Litigation and advocacy strategies were also discussed. Panelists included: Lee Gelernt, Deputy Director, Immigrants’ Rights Project, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Eleanor Acer, Senior Director for Refugee Protection, Human Rights First Dylan Corbett, Executive Director, Hope Border Institute CMS Interim Executive Director, Kevin Appleby, moderated the discussion. A recording of the webinar is now available to view.
