[1]U.S. Senator Chris Murphy

I’ve talked a lot about how my campaign is going to raise money the right way. The absurd amounts of money in our politics are a corrosive force, and I refuse to go along with the way Washington says I should raise money.

That’s why I’ve made a set of commitments about how this is going to work, and here it is:

It’s important to me that we spell out what this means. We have to walk the walk and lead by example if we want to change how these things work.

If this resonates with you, I hope you’ll make a contribution to my re-election. This effort is funded entirely by people. What we accomplish is going to come down to the action as a movement collectively.

A lot of people in Washington will tell you to gum up people’s inboxes with five emails a day and use fake “triple matches,” made-up deadlines (like mid-month) and scare tactics to raise a quick buck. They will call you foolish for rejecting the easy corporate and PAC money.

Truthfully, it’s how many candidates raise money. Rejecting PAC and corporate money alone is likely leaving millions of dollars on the table.

But it’s worth it to me to make sure you know that I always put them first.

The truth is this was a big risk. The gun lobby and Republicans have limitless sums of dark money at their disposal. But it’s the right thing to do, so I’m taking a leap of faith and putting my trust in this movement we’ve built.

My bet is that by doing this the right way then together we can show my colleagues that there’s a better model.

Will you please consider making a contribution to my re-election today? Without PAC and corporate money, the only chance we have to hold this seat will be with support from you.

The more overwhelming the grassroots response is here, the better chance we have at changing how we run campaigns and who Washington works for.

Every best wish,

Chris Murphy
