Here’s why: right now, congressional negotiations on a massive budget deal are heating up. Without a deal, the government could go into default, giving Republicans a window to attempt to sneak giveaways to the fossil fuel industry into the must-pass deal. Republicans showed their hand a few weeks ago when the House passed H.R.1 — a bill dubbed the “Polluters Over People Act.” The bill was their number one legislative priority and included a massive increase in oil and gas drilling. More dangerous pipelines. Deep cuts to clean energy investments. And it gutted the power of communities to push back on projects that would expose their communities to pollution — while blocking President Biden from being able to intervene. This bill will not move in the Senate, but with budget negotiations looming, we expect Republicans to attempt to force many of those same handouts to Big Oil execs into the deal.
We won’t let Congress gut environmental protections without a fight, Friend. We’re gearing up for a massive pressure campaign, demanding that Senate Democrats and President Biden hold the line and refuse to support a budget deal that includes anti-environmental poison pills. Moderates in the Senate are hearing from environmentalists like you and thinking twice about any deal that would sacrifice the health of our environment and our communities for the sake of compromise with extreme MAGA Republicans.
